Cat Cams Full Race Cams for Z20 Engine

 

These camshafts are about as lairy as they come for the Z20. Designed for full race use, moving the bulk of the torque to the top end. They are ideal for use with fair to wild sized turbos.

These cams are a mechanical profile, meaning you will need to also swap all of your hydraulic lifters out for solid type ones and install Cats double valve springs. These can be found as a full kit along with a set of our valve stem seal retainers here.

We also recommend the use of our adjustable cam pullies to ensure you extract the maximum potential from this kit.

Overall this is a very involved setup aimed at very serious builds.

RnD Z20 Valve stem seal retainers with stem seals and Cat single springs

 

The Z20 engine has a slight habit of blowing off the valve stem seals with high boost, particularly on the exhaust side. These little gems will keep them held down throughout the most arduous race use.

Precision CNC machined from Stainless Steel they are designed to be used with standard type stem seals and both double or single valve springs.

Sold as a kit with a fresh set of stem seals and a set of Cat Cams' single fast road valve springs. These are ideal for use with their fast road cams, the XEV cams, or just for higher rpm high boost stability with the standard cams.

These are cheap insurance against the dreaded smokey idle that these engines are notorious for.

 

Note:- On anything serious we lightly hone the inside lip off of the exhaust side stem seals before fitting. This stops them gripping as tightly to the valves, and lets just a little bit of oil make it's way down to keep the stem seal from melting to the valve stem and ripping off. Intakes are fine as standard. Do not use any sealant on them.

Performance Cam Belt Kit

 

This uprated cambelt kit is built upon the Z20LEH kit, that includes one uprated steel idle roller on the exhaust side. It fits all the variants of Z20, the LET, LEH, LEL and LER.

We have replaced the intake side plastic roller with another uprated steel one. We find that the plastic rollers tend to make the belt degrade very quickly, along with themselves, which can be seen by pick up on both the roller and the belt after not too much running time.

With these steel rollers you do not get this pick up, and the rollers themselves will stand up to a lot more high rev abuse than their plastic counterparts.

We fit this kit to every engine we build now, as the more we looked at the rapid belt degredation, the more it worried us!

All parts are genuine GM, but we include a better bolt and lock washer for the tensioner, which doesn't have the silly shallow drive like the original.

BLACK NITRIDE:
This is a hardening treatment that even though it is not widely used as the chrome coating, it has several benefits and is becoming very popular, mainly for European and Japanese applications.
 

The microhardness is higher than the stainless steel base material, keeping good ductility beneath the hard nitrided layer (microhardness is 800HV minimum).
Surface finish is smoother than with chromed stems, having less friction between stem and guide.
 

Valve seat surface is harder with the nitrided layer, lasting longer with lead free fuels, alcohols, nitro or other "explosive" mixes. Matches any kind of seats (nodular iron seats, steel powder metal seats, hard aluminum-copper seats or beryllium copper seats).
 

Higher rpm's engines take full advantage of all previous features. The higher the engine speed the bigger the power loss due to internal engine friction! The black nitride layer reduces this power loss due to less valve-guide  friction.
 

The nitrided layer is adhered to the base material at a microscopic level, so does not "flake" or break when the valves bend due to impacts with the pistons.
 

The Black Nitride applies to the whole valve while the chrome coating is only applied to the stem.
 

All valves are swirl polished, have stem undercut and a hardened tip.

Z20 Supertech .5mm oversize Inconel Exhaust valves
